Every morning, my neighbor Evelyn dragged three, four, sometimes five enormous trash bags to the curb of our quiet Oak Park street. One day, I finally looked inside. I really wish I hadn’t.

Another three knocks echoed through the quiet neighborhood.

They weren’t random. They were deliberate. Rhythmic. Like someone inside was trying very hard to signal without being heard by someone else in the house.

Before I could take another step toward her property, Evelyn suddenly opened the garage door.

The knocking sound stopped instantly.

She smiled at me again. The exact same warm, inviting smile everyone on our street implicitly trusted.

“Can I help you with something?” she asked.

I forced a polite smile back.

“No… I was just taking an evening walk.”

Her cold eyes stayed locked on mine for several highly uncomfortable seconds.

Then, she slowly pressed the button on her garage door remote.

As the metal door began steadily closing again, I caught one last terrifying glimpse inside.

Against the far back wall stood a massive, commercial-grade industrial freezer.

Its heavy steel door was secured shut with two thick brass padlocks.

And from beneath it…

A pale, trembling hand appeared for the briefest moment before pulling back into the shadows.
