My nine-year-old son Ethan had been getting his hair cut at the same barbershop for nearly two years.
It was one of those ordinary routines that never seemed important enough to remember. Every few weeks, we would walk into the shop, Ethan would climb into the chair, and I would sit nearby scrolling through my phone while the barber worked.
That afternoon, however, our usual barber was busy.
So when a new barber named Marcus offered to cut Ethan’s hair, I didn’t think twice.
Everything seemed completely normal.
Until he reached the hair behind Ethan’s left ear.
Marcus suddenly stopped.
The clippers went silent.
For several seconds, he simply stared at the skin behind my son’s ear.
Then he looked at me through the mirror.
His expression had changed.
There was no longer anything casual about his face.
When the haircut was finished, Ethan jumped out of the chair and ran toward the candy machine near the entrance.
Marcus waited until my son was out of earshot.
Then he leaned toward me.
“Check behind his ear,” he whispered.
I frowned.
“What?”
He glanced toward the other customers.
“At home,” he said quietly. “Look carefully.”
Before I could ask anything else, another customer approached the chair.
Marcus stepped back and picked up his clippers again.
I left the shop with a strange feeling in my stomach.
I had no idea that within minutes, I would be calling the police.
The Tiny Object
We were home about ten minutes later.
Ethan ran upstairs to change clothes while I stood in the hallway thinking about what Marcus had said.
At first, I wondered whether I was overreacting.
Maybe Marcus had noticed a rash.
Maybe there was a small cut.
Maybe he’d simply seen something unusual.
Still, I couldn’t ignore his warning.
I called Ethan back into the room.
“Come here for a second, buddy.”
He sat down.
I moved his freshly trimmed hair away from his left ear.
At first, I saw nothing except a tiny reddish mark.
Then I touched it gently.
Something felt hard.
My stomach dropped.
I looked closer.
Hidden beneath a small flesh-colored patch was a tiny black disc.
It was barely larger than a grain of rice.
For a moment, I simply stared at it.
Then I looked at my son.
“Ethan, who put this here?”
His expression changed immediately.
